About West Long Branch NJ 07764
West Long Branch is a borough in Monmouth County, NJ. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of approximately 8,587. Before being called West Long Branch it was called Mechanicsville from the 18th century through the Civil War, and Branchburg in the 1870s. The present name West Long Branch was shown in the 1889 Wolverton Atlas of Monmouth County and appears to have gotten its name due to being close to a branch of the Shrewsbury River. After a bit of legal wrangling for several years, in 1908 the voters chose to call it West Long Branch officially and it was incorporated as a borough. The name comes from Long Branch which is called that because it is the “long branch” or south branch of the Shrewsbury River. West Long Branch is bordered by the Monmouth County municipalities of Eatontown, Long Branch, Ocean and Oceanport.
