About Summit NJ 07901
Summit is a city in Union County, NJ. As of the 2019 census, it has a population of approximately 21,913. It was originally incorporated as Summit Township in 1869 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Summit was reincorporated as a city in 1899. The derivations of the name Summit are varied. One is because it is located at the summit of the Second Watchung Mountain. Another is the Summit Lodge, a house to which jurist James Kent moved in 1837, and yet another says it was named by a local sawmill owner who granted passage to the Morris and Essex Railroad for a route to “the summit of the Short Hills”. Summit is bordered by the Union County municipalities of New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Mountainside, and Springfield.
