Springfield is a township in Union County, NJ. As of the 2018 census, it has a population of approximately 17,517. It was incorporated as a township in 1794 while the area was still part of Essex County. Springfield became part of the newly formed Union County in 1857. The township’s name derives from the many springs and brooks in the area. Springfield is bordered by the Union County municipalities of Union, Kenilworth, Westfield, Cranford, Mountainside, and Summit. It also borders the town of Millburn in Essex County.
