About Raritan NJ 08869

Raritan is a borough located in Somerset County NJ.   As of the 2021 census it has a population of approximately 9,096. It was originally created as a subdivision within Bridgewater Township in 1868 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature.  Following a series of bitter lawsuits between Raritan and Bridgewater, Raritan was allowed to become a fully independent Borough in 1948 based upon the results of a referendum.  The name Raritan is said to come from the “Raritans” a Native American tribe.  It means “forked river”, “stream overflows” or “point on a tidal river”.  Raritan is bordered by the Somerset County municipalities of Bridgewater, Hillsborough and Somerville.
