Paterson is the largest city as well as the county seat of Passaic County, NJ. As of the 2020 census, it was the state’s third most populous municipality with a population of 159,732. In 1791 Alexander Hamilton was a founder of the Society For Establishing Useful Manufactures which helped to use the energy from the Great Falls of the Passaic River to allow for economic independence from British manufacturers. The society founded Paterson, which became the site of the start of the Industrial Revolution in America. The city’s name is after William Paterson who was a statesman, signer of the Constitution and governor of New Jersey. Paterson signed the 1792 charter that established the town of Paterson. It was incorporated as a city in 1851. Paterson is bordered by the Passaic County municipalities of Clifton, Haledon, Hawthorne, Prospect Park, Totowa and Woodland Park.
