About Matawan NJ 07747
Matawan is a borough in Monmouth County, NJ. As of the 2023 census, it has a population of approximately 9,704. Matawan was part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, an effort by nine municipalities to reinvigorate the area’s economy by emphasizing traditional downtowns, dense residential neighborhoods, maritime history and the natural beauty of the region. That plan has since been integrated into the 2016 Monmouth County Master Plan. The area was named “Matovancons” by Dutch settlers and from this the name Matawan comes. There are also various Lenape Native American language words that the borough’s name may have come from. Matawan is bordered by the Monmouth County municipalities of Aberdeen and Marlboro.
