About Closter NJ 07624
Closter is a borough in Bergen County NJ. As of the 2021 census it has a population of approximately 8,521. The first land grant deed for the area known today as Closter NJ was written in 1671. Closter was settled by Dutch people and its name derives from the Dutch. It was originally called Klooster and pronounced “Klowster”, a dutch word meaning “a quiet place, monastery or cloister”. In the late 18th century the “K” was replaced by a “C” to anglicize the name and eventually the second “o” in the middle of the name was dropped and it became Closter. Closter is bordered by the Bergen County municipalities of Alpine, Demarest, Emerson, Harrington Park, Haworth and Norwood.
