About Passaic
Passaic is a city in Passaic County, NJ. As of the 2024 census it has a population of 70,722. It is located north of Newark on the Passaic River, it was originally settled by Dutch traders in 1678 as part of Aquackanonk Township. The city and the river both got their name from the Lenape word “pahsayek” which loosely translates to “valley” or “place where the land splits”. Passaic was chartered as a city in 1873. Clifton is the only land border of Passaic to the north, south and west. It is bordered to the west by the Passaic River.
