About Elizabeth NJ 07066
Elizabeth is the county seat of Union County, NJ. As of the 2020 census, it is NJ’s fourth-most-populated town (behind Newark, Jersey City, and Paterson), with a population of approximately 137,000. Elizabeth was originally known as “Elizabethtown” and was founded in 1664 by English settlers. The town was named for Elizabeth, wife of Sir George Carteret, one of the two original colonies of the NJ Proprietors. It was also the first capital of New Jersey. During the American Revolutionary War, it was repeatedly attacked by British forces, culminating in the Battle of Springfield, which decisively defeated the British in New Jersey. There are numerous memorials and monuments of the American Revolution in Elizabeth.
